The National Collaborative on Faith and Disability 2015 Webinar SERIES (Collaborative on Faith and Disability)

While many agencies providing services and supports recognize the right to religious freedom, they seldom include spirituality in individual planning. Nor do they often help people participate in the spiritual activities or religious communities of their choice and/or tradition. Individuals and their families also often face a mixed response from congregations, even though many congregations and faith networks have established model programs and strategies for including people with disabilities.

This webinar series from Collaborative on Faith and Disability explores these dynamics and include the following on-demand webinars:

The mission of the Collaborative on Faith and Disability is to support people with disabilities, their families, and those who support them by providing national and international leadership in the areas of research, education, service, and dissemination related to disability, religion, and inclusive supports.

The Cycle of Grace: Living in Sacred Balance (The Upper Room)

Jesus faced amazing pressure and overwhelming demands throughout his ministry, but he did not experience the burnout so common today among Christian ministers and laypersons. We can, however, still learn the rhythm of living that Jesus demonstrates throughout the Gospels–the Cycle of Grace.

The Cycle of Grace is a rhythm that allows for rest and renewal keeping us deeply rooted in God’s love even as we work hard, and it examines 4 components of a grace-filled life:

Acceptance, Sustenance, Significance, Fruitfulness

This online course is designed for individual participation. Video recordings of teachings with authors Trevor Hudson and Jerry Haas guide the way. Practical exercises, suggestions for journaling and reflection, and a place to share comments with others.

Practicing Compassion (The Upper Room)

Through rich and moving stories of people from various faiths, Frank Rogers shows ways to incorporate compassion in our daily lives in this online course. His interfaith perspective on mercy, kindness, and caring for one another trains us to Pay attention, Understand empathically, Love with connection, Sense the sacredness, and Embody new life (PULSE). Key to Rogers’ instruction is that we begin our compassion practice by extending compassion to ourselves. Getting in touch with our breath, with our own belovedness, and grounding ourselves in the midst of tumultuous emotions is where we start our practice of extending compassion to the world.

Practicing Spirituality with the Peacemakers (Charter for Compassion Education Institute)

In “Practicing Spirituality with Peacemakers” the creators offer an alternative way of living that is built on the strong spiritual foundations of nonviolence, living together harmoniously, forgiving and being reconciled with others, and seeking common ground.

They start with the inner peace of contemplation and then move out to bringing peace to the family, neighborhood, and workplace. All this involves the practice of loving-kindness and compassion in the midst of the daily grind where tensions reign and tempers often flare. And then they take the personal and make it political as all will study how peacemakers have resisted the formidable powers of war and destruction.

This online course shares the teachings and inspirational practices of peacemakers such as Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thich Nhat Hanh, Desmond Tutu, Joan Chittister, Bernie Glassman, Daniel Berrigan, John Dear, and many others. The emails each include a short passage to contemplate and a related practice to try that day.

(6 CEHs for Chaplains available.)
