Science and Religion (Great Courses)

Professor Lawrence M. Principe unfolds a surprisingly cooperative dynamic in which theologians and natural scientists share methods, ideas, aspirations, and a tradition of disputational dialogue.

You will explore questions that are important to all religions, but the focus is on interactions in the “Latin West” where modern science largely took root. This includes formerly Latin-speaking Western European and Mediterranean regions, and the offspring of European culture, North America. The course spotlights the predominant religion of these lands: Christianity.

Our search is punctuated by Professor Principe’s wit and passion.

Books that Matter: The City of God (Great Courses)

Augustine started writing The City of God in 411 A.D. as a defense of Christianity after the sack of Rome—indeed, as a critique of the depravity of Rome itself. Yet by the time he completed the book more than 15 years later, he’d taken the offense, arguing in favor of a radical new relationship between humanity and the world. Modern readers, warily eyeing the book’s imposing scale, may wonder: What made this book so influential over the years? What mysteries lie between its pages? What relevance does the 1,600-year-old text have for our world today? How should contemporary readers approach this monumental text?

Take the plunge with this profound survey of one of the world’s truly great books. Books That Matter: The City of God ushers you on a historical and theological journey through the final years of the ancient world. Taught by Professor Charles Mathewes of the University of Virginia, these 24 in-depth lectures guide you chapter by chapter through Augustine’s masterpiece, introducing you not only to the book’s key arguments but also to the historical context necessary to comprehend The City of God‘s true power.

Whether you come to this text as a Christian, a philosopher, a historian, a literature lover, or someone who simply wants fresh insight into our world today, Augustine will revolutionize the way you think about politics, religion, history, and our relationship to the divine. Books That Matter: The City of God is a magnificent introduction to one of the world’s truly great books.

Think Again: How to Reason and Argue (Duke University)

Courses at a Glance:

All four courses in this series are offered through sessions which run every four weeks. We suggest sticking to the weekly schedule to the best of your ability. If for whatever reason you fall behind, feel free to re-enroll in the next session. We also suggest that you start each course close to the beginning of a month in order to increase the number of peers in the discussion forums who are working on the same material as you are. While each course can be taken independently, we suggest you take the four courses in order.

Course 1 – Think Again I: How to Understand Arguments

Course 2 – Think Again II: How to Reason Deductively

Course 3 – Think Again III: How to Reason Inductively

Course 4 – Think Again IV: How to Avoid Fallacies

About This Course in the Series:

We encounter fallacies almost everywhere we look. Politicians, salespeople, and children commonly use fallacies in order to get us to think what they want us to think. Think Again: Fallacies will show how to identify and avoid many of the fallacies that people use to get us to think the way they want us to think.

In this course, you will learn about fallacies. Fallacies are arguments that suffer from one or more common but avoidable defects: equivocation, circularity, vagueness, etc. It’s important to learn about fallacies so that you can recognize them when you see them, and not be fooled by them. It’s also important to learn about fallacies so that you avoid making fallacious arguments yourself.

Suggested Readings

Students who want more detailed explanations or additional exercises or who want to explore these topics in more depth should consult Understanding Arguments: An Introduction to Informal Logic, Ninth Edition, Concise, Chapters 13-17, by Walter Sinnott-Armstrong and Robert Fogelin.

Course Format

Each week will be divided into multiple video segments that can be viewed separately or in groups. There will be short ungraded quizzes after each segment (to check comprehension) and a longer graded quiz at the end of the course.

Hark! Listening for the Surprises of Advent (Presbyterian Outlook)

Cynthia Rigby

Source: Presbyterian Outlook

This on-demand webinar is devoted to inviting us, again, into the surprises and wonders of Christmas. How do we listen afresh to a story we have long known by heart? What is it that surprises us? What content of the message can spiral us into wonderment? How are we surprised – and then changed – in ways that lean into showing love to the world?

Some of the things we will be surprised by are: the requirement of repentance (what does that look like in our world, in 2015?), the scandalous character of the cross (really? The Word became flesh in one particular individual?), and the promise that, somehow, meeting the babe-born-of-Mary will fill us again with the first love we had for God.

This webinar was lead by Cynthia Rigby. Prof. Rigby is professor of theology at Austin Theological Seminary. She is the author of “The Promotion of Social Righteousness” and co-author of “Blessed One: Protestant Perspectives on Mary.”

Love of Neighbor in Advent online religious webinar

Source: ECF Vital Practices

Throughout the year, churches extend incarnational love to neighbors near and far through mission and outreach activities. Take time this Advent to meditate on the love at the heart of Christian social witness. This hour-long web retreat explored love as attention, love as justice, and love as imagination, to help churches love their neighbors in a way that transforms the world.

Presented by ECF Fellow the Rev. Ali Lutz, a doctoral student in Ethics and Society at Vanderbilt University’s Graduate Department of Religion.

Spirituality and Sensuality: Sacred Objects in Religious Life (Hamilton College)

Playing drums, telling stories, touching stones, creating wildly colorful altars, dancing, eating and drinking special substances are all basic religious activities. Examples will range across Native American, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and Jewish rituals and symbols, and materials will traverse fields from art history to anthropology, philosophy to poetry, science to religious studies. We will toggle between broad theories of religions and specific case studies.

An introductory week will be followed by a week on each of the five senses, and a concluding week. Each week we will incorporate lectures, readings, podcasts, images, and videos, and students will be challenged to spend a little time “offline” and taking notice of the sensual-spiritual elements that make up our cultural life.

What you’ll learn

  • Find ways to critically reflect on religious environments
  • Search for the sensual bases of religious traditions
  • Engage with examples across Native American, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and Jewish rituals and symbols

Fishing Tips (United Church of Canada)

Spend an hour with Hillhurst United Church minister John Pentland! In his recent book, “Fishing Tips,” John offers an open invitation to be curious. Using an ancient story as inspiration, he reflects on how Hillhurst United said “Yes” to throwing the nets on the other side of convention. The result was innovative, invigorating and transformative.

When ‘Spiritual but Not Religious’ is Not Enough (United Church of Canada)

Join minister and celebrated author, Rev. Dr. Lillian Daniel, for a one-hour conversation on her most recent book, When “Spiritual But Not Religious” is Not Enough: Seeing God in Surprising Places, Even the Church.

During this webinar Lillian will give a new spin on church with stories of what a life of faith can really be: weird, wondrous, and well worth trying. From a rock-and-roller sexton to a BB gun-toting grandma, a church service attended by animals to a group of unlikely theologians at Sing Sing, Daniel shows us a portrait of church that is flawed, fallible–and deeply faithful. With poignant reflections and sly wit, Daniel invites people to step out of themselves, dare to become a community, and encounter a God greater than they could ever invent.

Evolutionary Christian Mysticism (United Church of Canada)

Bruce Sanguin had an awakening experience on the shore of Narragansett, Rhode Island. He realized that he was the presence of the universe, in human form, evolving. He underwent an irreversible transformation of consciousness that involved his realization of unity with All That Is. Following this experience, his theological and spiritual orientation began to shift. In this webinar he will share the story of his spiritual and theological transformation.

Is evolution the godless, directionless, and purposeless process that the New Atheists make it out to be? Or can it be imagined as a divine strategy for bringing forth a world? What does it mean to be Christian when we know that the the evolutionary process itself has gained the capacity for conscious awareness, in, through, and as us? Who do we say that Jesus is, in a post-Darwinian, scientific age, in which evolution describes the fundamental nature of the universe? How do people understand “sin” in an evolutionary theology? These and other questions will be explored.
