The 2016 Compassion Course has almost 4,000 participants from over 100 countries. For five years running, this course has proven to be “life-changing”, “fun” and “transformational.”

Practicing Spirituality with the Peacemakers (Charter for Compassion Education Institute)

In “Practicing Spirituality with Peacemakers” the creators offer an alternative way of living that is built on the strong spiritual foundations of nonviolence, living together harmoniously, forgiving and being reconciled with others, and seeking common ground.

They start with the inner peace of contemplation and then move out to bringing peace to the family, neighborhood, and workplace. All this involves the practice of loving-kindness and compassion in the midst of the daily grind where tensions reign and tempers often flare. And then they take the personal and make it political as all will study how peacemakers have resisted the formidable powers of war and destruction.

This online course shares the teachings and inspirational practices of peacemakers such as Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thich Nhat Hanh, Desmond Tutu, Joan Chittister, Bernie Glassman, Daniel Berrigan, John Dear, and many others. The emails each include a short passage to contemplate and a related practice to try that day.

(6 CEHs for Chaplains available.)

Think Again: How to Reason and Argue (Duke University)

Courses at a Glance:

All four courses in this series are offered through sessions which run every four weeks. We suggest sticking to the weekly schedule to the best of your ability. If for whatever reason you fall behind, feel free to re-enroll in the next session. We also suggest that you start each course close to the beginning of a month in order to increase the number of peers in the discussion forums who are working on the same material as you are. While each course can be taken independently, we suggest you take the four courses in order.

Course 1 – Think Again I: How to Understand Arguments

Course 2 – Think Again II: How to Reason Deductively

Course 3 – Think Again III: How to Reason Inductively

Course 4 – Think Again IV: How to Avoid Fallacies

About This Course in the Series:

We encounter fallacies almost everywhere we look. Politicians, salespeople, and children commonly use fallacies in order to get us to think what they want us to think. Think Again: Fallacies will show how to identify and avoid many of the fallacies that people use to get us to think the way they want us to think.

In this course, you will learn about fallacies. Fallacies are arguments that suffer from one or more common but avoidable defects: equivocation, circularity, vagueness, etc. It’s important to learn about fallacies so that you can recognize them when you see them, and not be fooled by them. It’s also important to learn about fallacies so that you avoid making fallacious arguments yourself.

Suggested Readings

Students who want more detailed explanations or additional exercises or who want to explore these topics in more depth should consult Understanding Arguments: An Introduction to Informal Logic, Ninth Edition, Concise, Chapters 13-17, by Walter Sinnott-Armstrong and Robert Fogelin.

Course Format

Each week will be divided into multiple video segments that can be viewed separately or in groups. There will be short ungraded quizzes after each segment (to check comprehension) and a longer graded quiz at the end of the course.

America Isn’t Itself When It’s Afraid (Amnesty International)

The “America I Believe In” responds to fear, hate, and bigotry by building a visible, active constituency to push back against those who try to convince us that human rights and national security are mutually exclusive. Through statements of solidarity, your local groups, student organizations, and places of worship can demonstrate to your communities and to your elected officials that the America we believe in leads with human rights.

The on-demand webinar offers a skillshare on how to organize these statements of solidarity, and what to do with them once you’ve created them.

Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (United Church of Canada)

Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is mentioned several times in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.  What does it mean? How is it applied in Canada in relationship to resource development and First Nations, Metis, and Inuit?  How does it relate to the Duty to Consult?  Is it only ‘aspirational’? What are the issues that are arising?  How can ‘settler peoples” stand in solidarity (e.g. responsible investment) with First Peoples in upholding FPIC?

John Dillon will provide an overview of the concept of FPIC, and together the presenters will explore the questions posed.  Barbara Wilson, acting as moderator, will also speak to issues that Haida Nation and other BC First Nations are facing, particularly in respect to the Northern Gateway pipeline.  Gkisedtanamoogk will bring the perspective of his Wanabaki people in relation to fracking in New Brunswick.
