Torah Alive: Israel and Worship – Rendezvous with History (Reform Judaism)

Jerusalem and Israel are a constant in our liturgy and ritual. When a child is born, at a wedding, even at burial, Jerusalem and Israel are present. In the Birkat Hamazon, for every meal and in the daily prayers for rain or dew, Israel is present. What part does Israel play in our daily lives dwelling outside the land?

Presenters: Joan Glazer Farber and Rabbi Daniel Allen

Quick & Dirty Intro to Live Streaming Worship (Practical Resources for Churches)

Discussion in this will includes necessary hardware, hospitality issues (including chat rooms), and whether to upload print content. Christopher Harris also highlights real examples of churches successfully live streaming, and the technical and messaging issues they had to work through.

Born a geek, Christopher Harris coded his first church website in 1997. In 2003 he entered Seminary, concluding his M.Div studies just as social media reached a tipping point when Facebook opened its site to the public. Via his company, Faith Growth, Christopher and his team help churches move to a digital-first mindset, whether helping to develop a new website, implement smart social media practices, or develop a comprehensive plan to effectively engage and grow church communities online.

The Great Works of Sacred Music (The Great Courses)

The first music schools in Europe were associated with the Catholic Church. Originally, the Church commissioned music, as composers and the clergy used the power of music to exalt God. The lineage of sacred works not only forms a glorious tradition within Western music, but also ultimately produced some of the greatest masterpieces in Western art, and created the foundation of the Western musical canon as we now know it. This phenomenal tradition includes works of genius such as:

  • Josquin des Prez’s Ave Maria, gratia plena, an exquisite polyphonic motet, and one of the first masterworks of sacred music;
  • Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Virgini, whose vocal pyrotechnics evoke the immensity of heaven;
  • Mozart’s Requiem, the final composition of the Classical master, and a work of astonishing dramatic power;
  • Mendelssohn’s Elijah, a remarkable distillation of the history of the oratorio, and a grand vision of what the oratorio might become; and
  • Faure’s Requiem, a deliberately anti-monumental work, written as a quiet expression of individual wonder.

In The Great Works of Sacred Music, you’ll study these extraordinary creations and many more, taking in a rich panorama of Western sacred music and its most magnificent artistic landmarks. Studying the milestone works in this tradition not only introduces you to a repertoire and a legacy of extraordinary musical greatness, but also provides a vivid and essential view of how Western music came to be. As you’ll discover, many of the forms and structures that underlie all of Western music, as well as many of the compositional techniques through which music conveys meaning, were pioneered by composers of sacred music.

Studying the great sacred works also shows you how the musical components of Christian ritual developed, illustrates the interplay between music and Christian worship, and reveals how music’s unique capacities have been used to amplify the meaning and significance of religious texts.

Finally, the lineage of sacred music includes major masterworks of Bach, Handel, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Elgar, and many others. Exploring these works within the context of their creation shows how sacred musical expression fits together as a tradition, and forms a beloved and hugely meaningful current within Western art.

Speaking to all of these matters and more in The Great Works of Sacred Music, Professor Charles McGuire of the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music takes you on a deep dive into the history and evolution of sacred music in the West. Professor McGuire, a celebrated musicologist with a richly detailed knowledge of this tradition, fills these 16 engrossing lectures with essential insights and stunning musical excerpts, covering over 1,200 years of music, from medieval chant to the massive sacred works of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An accomplished musician himself, Professor McGuire sings excerpts and examples for you throughout the course. This is music for the religious and the non-religious person alike—a tradition of compelling universality, beauty, and humanity in art.

Intergenerational Worship (United Church of Canada)

intergenerational-worship-webinar-united-church-canada

At its worst, intergenerational services become a congregation’s way to showcase their young people. At its best intergenerational services create transformational experience that people of different cultures can share together.

This webinar defines intergenerational services as intercultural worship spaces, where each generation brings and shares their own cultural learning to the corporal experience. With this understanding, we will explore ways of creating cross-culture experiences in worship that attempt to connect generational gaps. We will explore ways of honouring and respecting this cultural diversity by becoming more aware of the common developmental stages and cultural trends of different age groups within the worshiping community and discussing how this knowledge can be applied to creating meaningful and engaging worship experiences.

Lent Webinar 2016 with Marcia McFee (Worship Design Studio)

Source: Worshipo Design Studio
In January of 2015, Dr. McFee and Dr. Elnes led a retreat for the BTS Center in Maine based on the manuscript for Eric’s upcoming book, Gifts of the Dark Wood: Seven Blessings for Soul Skeptics (and other Wanderers).
This retreat was so compelling that the seed was planted to create a worship series based on the book. Marcia’s frequent music collaborator, Chuck Bell, provided musical support for that retreat and was on board to work with Marcia to help create original music and arrangements for familiar hymns for the series as well.

The on-demand webinar below demonstrates all of Dr. McFee’s well-known principles of meaningful and memorable worship:
• Intentional Spiritual Journeys
• Congregational Participation
• Sensory-Rich Communication
• Deeply Spiritual Leadership
• Attention to Dynamics and Flow

 Utilizing this webinar will not only help you plan for Lent instantly, it can help train your team as you practice the concepts of meaningful and memorable sensory-rich worship.
