A Good Death (United Methodist Church)

This on-demand webinar begins by looking at what a faithful death looks like. It focuses on techniques to assist older adult ministry leaders to help those they serve by imagining their own deaths and overcoming fears of the unknown.

One concentration of the session will be on how to assist leaders in raising the larger existential questions about death when even leaders are uncomfortable with the subject matter. Finally, it will cover and educate leaders about how to evaluate and adapt death preparation resources for their own setting.

PRESENTER: Will Randolph, Director of Aging and Older Adult Ministries (recorded 08/04/2017)

Presenter Bio:

Rev. Tim Hamilton has been a Hospice Chaplain since 2000, when he was with AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Currently, he is a Hospice Chaplain and Grief Counselor for Kaiser Permanente Foundation. During his ten-years with Kaiser, Tim has increased accessibility to the Los Angeles Bereavement Groups, which are now open to the public and tim-hamiltonwelcoming of the LGBTQI communities. Rev. Tim was ordained into MCC in 2008, graduated from The Pacific School of Religion, is a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, and Certified Grief Counselor. He has completed internships at St. Luke’s (San Francisco) and Children’s Hospital (Los Angeles). Tim has attended End-Of-Life Doula workshops, complicated grief courses, and taught Understanding Spiritual Aspects of End-of-Life to clinicians and laity.

Rites of Passage & 21st Century Community (United Church of Canada)

Historically, intentional rites of passage marking the life stage transition from adolescence to adulthood were intrinsic to human culture. In the current 21st century life they are virtually and conspicuously absent. Presented by David Hatfield, this webinar will highlight the hallmark features that compose a grounded, intentional rite of passage process. It will also explore how youth are initiating themselves into adulthood in the absence of intention, community-based rites of passage. Ultimately, the webinar will look at examples of contemporary rites of passage programming and how caring adults and organizations can make an offering of effective and compelling rites of passage experiences to adolescents and young adults.

Questions the webinar will explore include: What information and skills do youth need to navigate 21st century adulthood? What balance needs to be made in rites of passage work between the wisdom of traditional and indigenous practices, and the use of innovative and contemporary practices? How can people develop and define their own eldership – who is an elder, and who defines eldership? What is the story we are inviting young people into, and is it compelling enough to engage their passions and gifts?

Intergenerational Worship (United Church of Canada)

intergenerational-worship-webinar-united-church-canada

At its worst, intergenerational services become a congregation’s way to showcase their young people. At its best intergenerational services create transformational experience that people of different cultures can share together.

This webinar defines intergenerational services as intercultural worship spaces, where each generation brings and shares their own cultural learning to the corporal experience. With this understanding, we will explore ways of creating cross-culture experiences in worship that attempt to connect generational gaps. We will explore ways of honouring and respecting this cultural diversity by becoming more aware of the common developmental stages and cultural trends of different age groups within the worshiping community and discussing how this knowledge can be applied to creating meaningful and engaging worship experiences.
