Introduction to Judaism (Great Courses)

  • Although Judaism is defined by its worship of one God, it was not always a pure monotheism. In I Kings 8, King Solomon addresses the Lord by saying, “There is no God like You,” suggesting that the Israelites recognized the existence of other gods.
  • The practice of Judaism was focused on animal sacrifice until the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans in the 1st century, which forced a radically new approach to worship.
  • The political emancipation of the Jews in 18th-century Europe transformed a 1,000-year-old style of Jewish life. “You can’t find an expression of Judaism today that is just like [the way] Jews lived 300 years ago,” says Professor Shai Cherry.

Yet for all it has changed, Judaism has maintained unbroken ties to a foundation text, an ethnicity, a set of rituals and holidays, and a land.

In these 24 lectures, Professor Cherry explores the rich religious heritage of Judaism from biblical times to today.

Muslims in Britain: Changes and Challenges (Cardiff University)

Muslims in Britain online course

Source: Future Learn

Islam is the second largest religion in the world today and dominates much of the current geopolitical discourse. People are increasingly bombarded by dramatic and at times disturbing headlines. Yet general knowledge of Muslims and their faith can be poor. There is consequently a need for a balanced and well-informed understanding of the current debates around this internationally significant topic.

This course uses Britain as a case study to shed light on wider issues relating to the growth of Islamic communities across the culturally Christian and increasingly secularised Western World. This MOOC reflects the work of the Islam-UK Centre at Cardiff University, and the research that we have conducted over the last decade. This means that we focus in this course upon the everyday lives of Muslims in Britain, as opposed to the activities of the very small minority of Muslims who engage in terrorist activities. Later in the course, we will help you to access material on this topic if you are interested

Reformed Spirituality (United Church of Canada)

Many people would be surprised to learn that John Calvin, the founder of the Reformed branch of Protestantism, believed that mystical union with Christ was of utmost importance – union in our individual hearts and the hearts of faith communities. In fact, denominations within the Reformed tradition, of which the United Church of Canada is a part, have a rich history and theology of Reformed spirituality to be retrieved and further developed.

Already Missional (United Church of Canada)

Presenting a congregational development tool called Already Missional, which is available to EDGE consultants working with United Churches.  United Church parishioners are often leaders and volunteers in the local community’s social service sector.  The already-missional model explores these established community partnerships to build the congregation’s capacity for mission.  The webinar will describe the tool’s “missional readiness questions” and approach to missional action.

Living the Dream, Baby! (United Church of Canada)

After participating in the United Church’s 2013 Greenbelt Pilgrimage to the Greenbelt Festival in England, a group of ten under-40 ministers from the southern Ontario area gathered to talk about how to keep the dream alive… in their ministries and in their lives. What resulted was a weekend-long event over the Labour Day weekend of 2014 for youngish ministers and their families. The gathering was life-giving, it was creative, it was relaxed, and it was filled with play.

Betsy Exley and Michael Shewburg were two members of the event’s planning team. During this webinar, they will talk about how the idea for Living the Dream was inspired, the model that it created for similar events, what they learned, what they loved, how they’ve been energized through this gathering,  and a bit about what’s next.

Intercultural Ministries (United Church of Canada)

In 2006, The United Church of Canada made a commitment to becoming an intercultural church. Now, years later, how do people understand “intercultural”? How can people effectively engage with difference?

Presented by Adele Halliday, this webinar will be an interesting introduction to intercultural ministries, as well as offer helpful ideas for people who have already begun exploring what intercultural means in their congregations.

This webinar can help congregational leaders feel equipped to create intercultural spaces that are welcoming of diverse cultural communities. It will explore practical ways of what congregations can do around intercultural ministries, and will have tools, ideas, and resources for congregations.
