Welcoming People with Disabilities into Christ’s Church (Presbyterian Outlook)

Welcoming-People-with-Disabilities-into-Christs-Church--on-demand-webinar

Jesus calls us to draw in people from the margins of our communities, but the attitudes in our congregations may communicate fear or pity rather than the welcome of true belonging. We have built ramps into our churches. Have we built inclusive relationships?

In this on-demand webinar we will talk about stages of changing attitudes. We will hear the story of a church making small changes that have made a big difference in the life of a family. We will see how making one church ministry more inclusive can become a gateway for people to experience the gospel. We will begin the conversation for you to continue that practice of invitation in your church and community.

Participants will be able to:

  • Discuss attitudes in congregations that may be barriers to relationships with people impacted by disability.
  • Explore adaptive practices in ministries of worship, learning, mission and fellowship.
  • Identify an existing church ministry that could be adapted to include people with developmental disabilities.
  • Use resources (in the community, online and in print) to help equip leaders and volunteers to include people of all abilities in congregational life.

Do You Really See Me?: Pastoral Care and Disabled People SERIES (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education)

Do You Really See Me? “See me! Touch me! Feel me!” sang Tommy in the great rock musical by the Who. Intellectual and developmental disabilities are a diagnostic category but not an illness or disease. People with labels such as cerebral palsy, autism and intellectual disability also get sick and deal with other life threatening diseases. However, they and their families and/or caregivers often experience typical acute care hospitals as risky and dangerous places because of assumptions about disability, issues in communication, and judgments about quality of life, grief, and loss.  Pastoral caregivers thus have the opportunity to combine sensitive care of individuals, families, and staff with advocacy that addresses stereotypes, assumptions, and gaps in their care and support.

The National Collaborative on Faith and Disability 2015 Webinar SERIES (Collaborative on Faith and Disability)

While many agencies providing services and supports recognize the right to religious freedom, they seldom include spirituality in individual planning. Nor do they often help people participate in the spiritual activities or religious communities of their choice and/or tradition. Individuals and their families also often face a mixed response from congregations, even though many congregations and faith networks have established model programs and strategies for including people with disabilities.

This webinar series from Collaborative on Faith and Disability explores these dynamics and include the following on-demand webinars:

The mission of the Collaborative on Faith and Disability is to support people with disabilities, their families, and those who support them by providing national and international leadership in the areas of research, education, service, and dissemination related to disability, religion, and inclusive supports.

Creating Welcoming Multicultural UU Communities (Unitarian Universalist Association)

Fulfilling the affirmation and promise of the second principle requires that we attend carefully to systems of injustice in our midst and the hurts those systems cause. It requires that we be prophets, daring to work in this life for a Now that gets us closer to fulfilling the promise of our sixth principle: the goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all. Dismantling systems of privilege and oppression within our community faith allows us to co-create the Beloved Community of Love and Justice that we aspire to.

Dean: Rev. Alicia Forde, Program Coordinator for Multiracial Congregations, Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).
