Preaching Through Advent

online-christian-course-preaching-through-advent-united-church-canadaIssues of entitlement spring fresh in December. Depression slips over the landscape like North Atlantic fog. In the midst of this, the ecstatic expressions of Zechariah, Mary and Elizabeth – not to mention an angel – shake the boots off us and send us running for cover. How do we make these stories matter for people who take time to show up at church? What’s the difference between preaching and just words? How do we use poetry as a tool for change? Let’s come to the Christmas Eve feast nourished by a wholesome breakfast.

Introduction to Advent with Tim Schenck

Source: ChurchNext

Advent is a season of great anticipation, both inside and outside of the Church. While the world around us shops, cooks, and prepares for December 25, Christians have their own way of anticipating the birth of Jesus.

In this class, Episcopal priest and author Tim Schenck will open up our imaginations to the magic of this holy time of year.

Tim Schenck has just published a newish book called A Dog in the Manger (see below). This course is appropriate for those who are new to the church year, as well as those who are familiar, but are looking for a refresher.

You can take this course as a person or as a group!

Though it is perceived in the tradition as a minor festival, the Festival of Lights has taken on hugely greater significance in the life of North American Liberal Jewish households. Is it possible to find some greater depth to an observance which is one of the two most highly practiced in our communities? This webinar will explore the ways in which, through story, music and ritual the spiritual and personal relevance of Hanukkah to our lives as Jews in the United States and Canada.

Praying for Justice and Peace (Spirituality & Practice)

Source: Spirituality & Practice

Praying for justice and peace is one response to the situations in the world, and it is available to everyone. But many of us are unsure how to pray and what to pray for. We may question the efficacy of prayer and wonder about a God that “allows” such suffering. In our confusion, we may never respond to our longing to pray.

This Online Retreat gives us an opportunity to explore these valid questions and free our minds and hearts for prayer. The lessons cover such themes as the five forms of prayer (intercession, action, soul care, discernment, transformation), answers to prayer, calls to action and rest, and the power and promise of a peaceful heart. The course consists of:

• 12 email lessons
• 4 guided audio meditations designed to help you develop your prayer practice
• Recording of a one=hour teleconference with Jane Vennard from when this e-retreat was first offered in February 2012.

This retreat was created by Jane Vennard, who also helmed our e-course on Intercessory Prayer. She is one of Spirituality & Practice’s Living Spiritual Teachers and the author of Embracing the World and other books on prayer. A United Church of Christ minister, she is a professor of prayer and spirituality at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado. She has been a spiritual director for more than 20 years and has led retreats on many kinds of prayer in international ecumenical settings.

Praying for peace with justice is always a work in progress. This prayer retreat is designed to help you engage in and contribute to this holy work.

InterSpiritual Meditation (Spirituality and Practice)

Source: Spirituality and Practice

InterSpiritual Meditation is a step towards InterSpiritual Wisdom and a foundation for profound peace among peoples of all religions. As an individual contemplative practice, it helps us to cultivate inner peace, wisdom, and compassion that is inclusive of all traditions. As a group process or liturgy, it helps us to create contemplative communities that can include practitioners of many traditions.

This Online Retreat, originally designed to be presented over six weeks, will consist of daily emails covering the seven steps of the InterSpiritual Meditation:

• Motivation
• Gratitude
• Transformation
• Compassion
• Mindfulness
• Meditation
• Dedication

Six recorded audio conference calls will give us opportunities to hear of the experiences of teachers from the Spiritual Paths Institute: Ed Bastian, Kabir and Camille Helminski, Swami Atmarupananda, and Cynthia Bourgeault. A recording of the full guided InterSpiritual Meditation as well as short separate meditations for each of the steps are also included.

Two new books, InterSpiritual Meditation: A Seven-Step Process from the Worlds Spiritual Traditions and Meditations for InterSpiritual Wisdom: Practices and Reading Drawn from the World’s Spiritual Traditions, are also available for an additional charge or are available on Amazon (see below)
