Listening to the Echo (United Church of Canada)

Based on nearly 500 responses from across Canada, the first webinar will identify spiritual themes in this population, the challenges that they present for congregational ministry, and discuss the implications for ministry and leadership.

Learning from Listening — Emerging Ministries and Fresh Expressions

As a nominee for Moderator in 2012, Tom Sherwood spoke of “a vision of the United Church in the future with fewer congregations but more ministries.” In the second webinar, he will take some of the “learning from listening” and relate them to examples of new expressions in ministry, such as Faith and Arts Ottawa, The Open Table, Faith House Ottawa, and The god Monologues.

New faith communities are forming, not based on postal code and kinship. How are they forming? Who is joining them? What are they doing? Can the Church connect with them? What can we learn that will strengthen our ministry in God’s mission? The second webinar will be a lively discussion of ministries that are “biblical but not traditional” – at least not easily visible in the 20th-century traditions of The United Church of Canada.

Living the Dream, Baby! (United Church of Canada)

After participating in the United Church’s 2013 Greenbelt Pilgrimage to the Greenbelt Festival in England, a group of ten under-40 ministers from the southern Ontario area gathered to talk about how to keep the dream alive… in their ministries and in their lives. What resulted was a weekend-long event over the Labour Day weekend of 2014 for youngish ministers and their families. The gathering was life-giving, it was creative, it was relaxed, and it was filled with play.

Betsy Exley and Michael Shewburg were two members of the event’s planning team. During this webinar, they will talk about how the idea for Living the Dream was inspired, the model that it created for similar events, what they learned, what they loved, how they’ve been energized through this gathering,  and a bit about what’s next.

Rites of Passage & 21st Century Community (United Church of Canada)

Historically, intentional rites of passage marking the life stage transition from adolescence to adulthood were intrinsic to human culture. In the current 21st century life they are virtually and conspicuously absent. Presented by David Hatfield, this webinar will highlight the hallmark features that compose a grounded, intentional rite of passage process. It will also explore how youth are initiating themselves into adulthood in the absence of intention, community-based rites of passage. Ultimately, the webinar will look at examples of contemporary rites of passage programming and how caring adults and organizations can make an offering of effective and compelling rites of passage experiences to adolescents and young adults.

Questions the webinar will explore include: What information and skills do youth need to navigate 21st century adulthood? What balance needs to be made in rites of passage work between the wisdom of traditional and indigenous practices, and the use of innovative and contemporary practices? How can people develop and define their own eldership – who is an elder, and who defines eldership? What is the story we are inviting young people into, and is it compelling enough to engage their passions and gifts?

Preaching in the Inventive Age (United Church of Canada)

The last two centuries can be divided into four epochs: Agrarian, Industrial, Informational and now-Inventive. The Inventive Age – the currently reality – presents distinct opportunities for how faith communities think, what they value, and the tools they use. Presenter Doug Pagitt offers leaders in Christian communities (and beyond) essential frameworks for participation in the Inventive Age.

Naked Spirituality (United Church of Canada)

In Naked Spirituality, Brian McLaren draws upon and integrates the work of several leaders in the fields of spiritual formation and human development to propose a four- stage model of spiritual development. Within that framework, he proposes twelve basic practices or postures of the heart that are essential to a life with God, rooting each practice in a single, simple word.

In this webinar, explore this four-stage framework and these twelve practices in approaching the question, “How do we help people learn to love God with all their heart, soul, strength, and mind?” Then, explore a related question – how the four-stage framework can assist Christian leaders in helping people to love their neighbors as themselves.

Intercultural Ministries (United Church of Canada)

In 2006, The United Church of Canada made a commitment to becoming an intercultural church. Now, years later, how do people understand “intercultural”? How can people effectively engage with difference?

Presented by Adele Halliday, this webinar will be an interesting introduction to intercultural ministries, as well as offer helpful ideas for people who have already begun exploring what intercultural means in their congregations.

This webinar can help congregational leaders feel equipped to create intercultural spaces that are welcoming of diverse cultural communities. It will explore practical ways of what congregations can do around intercultural ministries, and will have tools, ideas, and resources for congregations.

What are some of the uses and misuses of religion in political campaigns, and how can people of faith promote civil, thoughtful dialogue across differences on critical issues of the day.

This on-demand webinar includes Rev. Welton Gaddy, President of the Interfaith Alliance, and K. Hollyn Hollman, general counsel, Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty and it explores ways that you and your congregation can become involved!

Justice and Love in Action: Anti-racism Strategies for Preaching and Worship (Metropolitan Community Churches)

mcc-webinar-justice-love-action

In view of ongoing unrest in the world, including but not limited to racialized violence in the U.S., as well as the distress many felt during and after the MCC General Conference, especially as it may have reflected the continuing power of white privilege/supremacy, misogyny, and U.S. domination/imperialism, the need to help clergy address racism in preaching and liturgy seems more acute than ever.

Utilizing presentations and discussion, this two-part webinar series began with the importance of self-reflection and awareness. Anti-racism resources and strategies utilized in MCC congregations were presented, along with how this work impacts pastors and the congregation. Participants gained skills for facilitating conversations about racism and white privilege. Specific resources were identified. These webinars were facilitated by Rev. Dr. Robin Gorsline and Rev. Dr. Elijah C. Nealy and can be viewed by clicking on the links below.

Book Study: Stand Your Ground: Black Bodies and the Justice of God (Metropolitan Community Churches)

MCC-Book-Study-Stand-Your-Ground

The book Stand Your Ground: Black Bodies and the Justice of God (Orbis Books, 2015) was written by Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas (Episcopal priest and professor at Goucher College, Maryland) as one black mother’s response to the killing of Trayvon Martin and others. She goes back into the history of the United States and its colonial origins to demonstrate that white privilege and entitlement have been part of the American “DNA” since the inception of our republic.

After situating the current context historically, Douglas then offers some theological thoughts about how the Justice of God intersects with the treatment of black bodies. Her discussion is provocative yet measured; she is not a radical voice calling for anarchy or revolution in the streets, but rather a mother wondering if her son will return to her alive when he goes out for an evening with his friends.

This book group will be conducted in six installments and facilitated by Rev. Dr. Tom Bohache and Rev. Elder Diane Fisher on Tuesdays from 4 October through 8 November, 2016, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM US Eastern Time (8:00 – 9:30 PM UTC) in Adobe Connect.

Registration is limited to 15 and at a fee of $50 USD.

Click here to register. Continuing education credit applies for clergy, but this is open to all. The book is available at Amazon.com in both paperback and electronic formats.
